South Street - ALIVE!

The Countess of Huntingdon was a lady of the realm with a considerable fortune left to her when her husband died. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord & Saviour and was found in fellowship with the 'dissenters' of the eighteenth century. Her close friends included George Whitfield and Charles Wesley. The Countess paid for chapels to be built on her own properties so that Whitfield and company had places to preach. Churches opened across the country, a Bible college was established, men were appointed to the chapels and Whitfield and others travelled to America and opened chapels over there mainly in the areas of slave trading. When slave trading was abolished the British government gave land in Nova Scotia for a settlement for the slaves but being too cold soon gave land on the west coast of Africa and the slaves were transported back to their homeland and to 'Sierra Leone' - hence 'FREETOWN' . See our page on the 'SIERRA LEONE MISSION'
In England the Countess of Huntingdon Connexion was established as it's own denomination and churches spread across the country. So it has remained until this past year when the Connexion joined with the Wesleyan Reform Union to form 'NEW CONNEXIONS'.
The trustees of the Connexion hold the responsibility of approving the appointment of pastors and provide care, advice and fellowship for those pastors. All churches and chapels are 'autonomous' and are responsible only to their Church Meeting.
